About

I ran for the position of SFSS FASS Rep because not only am I passionate about improving my faculty, I also want to help improve the school as a whole. Since elementary school, I knew I wanted to go to SFU. Since high school, I knew I wanted to be in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

When my expectations for SFU didn't match up to the reality, I resolved to work hard to bridge that gap and fulfill my vision of what I want this school to be.

The main points on my platform are mental health, accessibility, and faculty engagement.

Mental Health

My first co-op position was a Marketing and Communications Assistant at Health & Counselling. This gives me a unique perspective since I was both a student at SFU and a staff member at SFU Health & Counselling.

I hear many people complain about Health & Counselling and our services and resources. I understand where these complaints are coming from, and using my unique perspective as well as my connections with the current staff, I can work towards resolving issues by acting as a student liaison.

Accessibility

As a Hard of Hearing student, I've never really made use of the Centre for Accessible Learning (previously Centre for Students with Disabilities). I didn't want to highlight my disability, so I pretended it didn't exist.

Now, I know that there is a vibrant d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing community I'm slowly learning to be a part of.

There are a lot of accessibility issues on campus that haven't been resolved. I am planning to sit on the Accessibility committee to discuss these issues and work towards a solution for them. I have also joined the Disability and Neurodiversity Coalition, to learn how to better advocate for accessibility needs.

I would also like to work to ensure that psychoeducational assessments are covered under the current health plan, a project that the current SFSS Education Rep is working on.

Faculty Engagement

Since starting school at SFU, I've been an engaged member of my faculty. I was a FASS Connections mentor and Welcome Leader, and last year I had the pleasure of working with the Society of Arts and Social Sciences team as their VP Administration.

I am looking forward to working with the new executive team in the upcoming year. Unfortunately, being the SFSS FASS Rep means I was not able to run for President of SASS, so instead, I will be working closely with the elected President and the rest of the executive team to host events to facilitate faculty connections throughout the year.
